PLANTS THAT PURIFY THE AIR!

06/07/2021 | Gardening, Green Wellness

Plants that purify the air in your home.
Or, let’s say it better 😁 plants that are keeping the air we breathe inside our living and / or working space cleaner.
… And  this is not a belief or a legend!

Researches, even the recent ones, show and certify that there are plants that can also benefit our health. Data report that filling your environments with plants can limit indoor pollution and that they even improve your mental well-being.

There are many kinds of indoor plants that purify the air, but how does it work?

We know that plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the environment through the process of chlorophyll synthesis. Furthermore, in the transpiration process, plants collect water through their leaves and thus limit the humidity of the indoors spaces.
A well-known NASA study has also shown that some types of plants can also neutralize VOCs, the Volatile Organic Compounds that are often present in our homes. Let’s think, in example, about dust, bacteria, smoke of cigarettes.
We must think about plants as “natural filters” that help us to purify the air we breathe.
That means that there are no places in your  rooms where you cannot place the plants. Even today someone shows reticence about this but it is wrong !!! We have to feel free to place plants even in the bedroom, bathroom … respecting the needs of our plants 😊

But let’s talk about plants that purify the air 🌱

Please do not miss the video uploaded on our IGTV  about this matter, here  our agronomist Vanessa shows the most common and loved plants (and clearly the pots) belonging to this category.

Now let’s see some of these plants here:

1) Dracaena (Dracaena spp.)
There are many species of this plant that comes directly from Madagascar. They are the right kind of plants that — eliminate VOCs especially benzene and formaldehyde.
These plants prefer light locations but they do not stand direct sunlight, as well as cold air.
The dracaena must be watered with moderation, when the soil results dried: in summertime water it twice a week, in wintertime you can water it once every 10-12 days.

IMPORTANT: Ensure good drainage and do not leave water in the saucer for more than half an hour! This plant is usually repotted in March, every 2 or 3 years, when the roots come out of the pot, in a container of one size bigger, using soil for green plants and placing a layer of medium sized expanded clay on the bottom of the pot ( 10-20 mm).

2) Common ivy (Hedera Helix)
This  is another  plant that helps us to purify the air and acts above all against formaldehyde and benzene, as well as neutralizing odors. Anyway be careful not to leave this plant close to dogs and cats that may live at home. If they eat small pieces of leaves they could be toxic! Ivy grows better in  bright locations, better without direct sun. It can stand cold temperatures, but it suffers if the heat is excessive. Repotting  is recommended in March. It multiplies by cutting, better in July-August or in autumn.

3) Fern (Pteridophyta)
Also in this case there are many species of ferns. Those with the largest leaves, among the most popular, return the absorbed water through their leaves. This is also why they can be chosen and “used” as excellent room humidifiers!
👉 The fern, whatever the species it belongs to, removes formaldehyde and xylene👈
Its ideal environment should be very bright (no direct light) and humid. In summertime it can be placed outdoors, in the shade, but with the arrival of  the cold weather it must be replaced into your home, at 20-24 ° C. It does not tolerate temperatures below 10 ° C.

Plants that purify the air, yes … but at this point, let’s ask ourselves an uncomfortable question 😎
Are plants really enough to purify the air in the house? No they aren’t!

In order to have significant results, we should have a large, very large, quantity of plants in our house 😁 A sort of mini jungle!
Let’s not forget that their benefits have to face with an habitat that is continuously exposed to pollutants: dust, cleaning products, wall paints, smoke, harmful particles derived for example from cooking food, scented candles, perfumes or nail polish.

So, it is ideal to  surround yourself with plants, remembering to open the windows and maybe use some air purifiers!
Have we already told you in the meantime to activate the notifications of our IG channel?
We will also talk about this with the agronomist and you will be enchanted by the dracena in the beautiful Lullaby Pot (that is a successful mix of combining well-being and beauty thanks to the Oltrevaso collection) and the fern in the Conca!

Have a good vision ❤️
